It's a very interesting question, Louis.

What we're seeing seems to me to be a globalized variation of the use of
protecting womanhood/motherhood as a tool of the slaveholders and the
Indian removers.  In both cases, realities about the role of women were
never as important as the self-righteousness of the chivalric male
protectors of female virtue.

The real difference in our day is that it's not just the virtue of
"white women" being protected but that of a globalized womanhood, which
must being liberated by American bayonets from the hold of "backward"
peoples who wish to keep her from going to the mall like an equal
citizen/consumer.
