Re: [Marxism] Anybody But Bismarck?
This topic was debated at huge length and angrily some years ago with no
opinions being changed, and I'm not going to debate it again. But for
the record.
Jim Blaut's account of the origins of capitalism was profoundly
mistaken, and as much as Jim opposed Weber, Jim's conception of the
origin of capitalism was essentially Weberian and anti-marxist.
I have sharp political disagreements with Brenner, but I believe his
account of the origin of capitalism is the account most compatible with
the historical perspective that informs marxist thought.
And one more observation that relates to current debates on religion
etc. There is _no_ automatic (or often even probable) direct relation
between explicit theory and practice. That relation is always incredibly
complex.
