RE: [Marxism] Woody Allen Speaks His Mind on Bush
Though I've never liked Woody Allen movies myself very much
Annie Hall IS one of the great comic masterpieces through
which I could certainly see elements of my own experience.
ZELIG:
Fictional documentary about the life of human chameleon
Leonard Zelig, a man who becomes a celebrity in the 1920s
due to his ability to look and act like whoever is around
him. Clever editing places Zelig in real newsreel footage
of Woodrow Wilson, Babe Ruth, and others.
PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO:
Cecilia is a waitress in New Jersey during the Depression
and is searching for an escape from her dreary life. Tom
Baxter is a dashing young archaeologist in the film "The
Purple Rose of Cairo." After losing her job Cecilia goes to
see the film in hopes of raising her spirits. Much to her
surprise Tom Baxter walks off the screen and into her life.
There's only one problem..Tom isn't real. Meanwhile
Hollywood is up in arms when they discover that other Tom
Baxters are trying to leave the screen in other theatres.
Will Tom ever return and finish the film or will he decide
to stay in the real world? Summary written by
Ricky Darbonne {nsdar8115@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}
In the early 1950s Howard Prince, who works in a
restaurant, helps out a black-listed writer friend by
selling a TV station a script under his own name. The money
is useful in paying off gambling debts, so he takes on
three more such clients. Howard is politically pretty
innocent, but involvement with Florence - who quits TV in
disgust over things - and friendship with the show's
ex-star - now himself blacklisted - make him start to think
about what is really going on. Summary written by Jeremy Perkins

Woody Allen plays a man of no real talent or strong
political convictions who is paid to be a front for a group
of black listed writers during the McCarthy period in the
United States (early 1950s). There are comedic elements in
his attempts to pass off stories he hasn't read as his own,
until he comes under the view of the UnAmerican Activities
Subcommittee. Summary written by John Vogel

That being said, I'm no great fan of Woody Allen. I've little
notion about why he got together with his current wife and do
not think it's the most urgent problem facing humanity. Rich
older men have always found ways to be with younger women for
a multiplicity of reasons.
Most Allen-bashing seems to me too sweeping and misses those
productions of his which have genuine artistic merit, such
as ANNIE HALL.
