Appreciate the help I got offline. A couple of comments. Symantec *does*
not get rid of the worm despite having a an option ("expanded") to remove
spyware, trojan horses, etc.

Adam Levenstein's suggestion of lavasoft's ad-aware freeware worked just
great!

Suggesting mozilla, etc. was a bit problematic since I am using a dial-up
right now and the new browser would probably take a week to download!
That's the biggest motivation for dsl or cable modem I think.

Finally, what kind of psychosis would lead a hacker to hijack a web
browser and force the user to cope with unwanted popup ads. Oh, I know. It
is called capitalism.
