[Marxism] Re: "Re: Myths and Realities President Chavez and theReferendun, Tom O'Lincoln"
I consciously wrote my article for John Riddell's Canada-based
"Socialist Voice," "Venezuela, Najaf, and New York," as offering a kind
counter-line on analysis, perspectives and tasks to Petras and many
others. The article also appeared on the list today.
Petras' latest article is a typical example of his "cup is half empty"
(f only because the cup keeps growing in size) analyses. I value
Petras's articles, but quite critically, frankly. People should check
back to the list for April 2002 to see how he wrote about Chavez when it
looked from afar like the coup might be succeeding. He basically
considered Chavez a disgraceful and defeated figure.
And I remember him as hyper-critical of the Cubans in the early 1960s.
He is a kind of chronic critic, though often a useful one, of
revolutionary processes and their leaderships. But as a guide to how to
approach Chavez and the process in Venezuela, I think he is dead wrong,
for the reasons I summarily state in the article.
