Re: [Marxism] Re: Bush's Speech [A response to Zell Miller's speech]

I have read all the contributions on this thread and they are
very good. American politics is going through a very
interesting phase at the moment. The exact characteristics
of that phase are, howevwer, very difficult to discern
clearly from where we stand.

But I tend to the optimistic end of the spectrum. True the
arrogance of the American ruling class is impressive. They
have an idiot and a fool in the White House and they seem to
be prepared to wear it. But I feel sure that is very much on
the surface. I think that sections of the ruling class know
that the spectacle of the Republicans -vicious, racist and
gayphobic - is not a rallying point for the nation.

On the contrary a crisis of legitmation is ripening every
day. Such is the potential depth of the crisis that I do not
think Bush can pull off the conscription draft. Kerry would
have had a better chance of bringing that off. Yet a draft
is what is needed to curtail the Iraqi resistance. But of
course it would only plunge them deeper into the quagmire.

So all in all the times remain doubtful for the ruling class
and delightful for us.

regards

Gary
