This is what I can't figure out. I don't understand their strategy.

The convention could have yielded all sorts of goodies if they were
bold/smart enough to exploit it.
==================
Actually when I went through Miller's speech, and the rhetoric of other
right-wing demagogues, for the first time I was truly scared: the
rhetoric is extremely powerful and extremely effective at a gut level.
What renders it all the more so, as I state in my article's conclusion,
is that these people are attacking, distorting and ridiculing what are
basically OUR positions - the Democrats don't even believe or pretend to
defend the positions being attacked in the first place. So for instance
we have the absurd notion that America was attacked "not because what it
has done wrong but what it does right" - and then on top of it, the
meaning of us being attacked because what "we did wrong" - the "we" part
of it is conflated to mean all Americans and is taken out of context of
the larger leftist analysis. The trend is undeniably clear: people want
a leader who is fanatically committed to his course even if that course
is straight off a cliff, rather than a "waffler" - even a slight one
like Kerry. The tragedy is that there is no electoral force that is
moving with the same fanaticism AWAY from the cliff. And since the
electoral big guns command the propaganda apparatus, that is a serious
problem for us.
