Re: [Marxism] Bush's Speech

This time, unlike the 1960s, we have a much broader spectrum of people
involved from the get-go.
But don't you think that this broader spectrum may be a weakness as much as a
strength? The movement, such as it is a the present time, is too
heterogenuous to be truly effective in my view. There are too many groups
pushing
different ideologies, and they only come together to put on demonstrations.
Whilst of
course demos are an important form of struggle, they cannot be the only form.
There just doesn't seem to be a cohesiveness or focus about it, apart from the
common belief that Bush is bad and has to go no matter what. It was the same
with the huge antwar movement a couple of years ago. Again, huge numbers, but
no real ideological foundation with which to repel the ruling class's ideology
of patriotism and support the troops. I believe that until there is
consistent and concerted mobilising going on within the oppressed communities,
until
the left starts to focus on local issues, such as police brutality, prisoner
abuse within US prisons, the death penalty, etc., there will never be anything
like a strong, militant grassroots movement. We need to earn the trust of our
black and hispanic brothers and sisters, help them organize, help them set up
services withing their own communites (yes, like the Panthers did), so that we
become relevant to people's everday lives. Up to now we have failed to properly
draw the connections between international and domestic imperialism. Only by
dismantling a system of social and economic injustice at home do we stand a
chance of ending imperialism abroad.
