  What will turn out to be decisive in this battle of Najaf, in my  
view, is the call to supporters nationwide to walk to Najaf and form a  
human chain around the beleaguered inner city. And according to the  
scant media reports, actually thousands are coming, explicitly  
unarmed.

  Also, as has been said here, that 'official' Iraqi Police, i.e. from  
the police force recruited under the auspices of the US occupation  
force, are defecting to the side of the Mehdi army, or at least  
showing their alleagiance by putting images of Moqtada as-Sadr on  
their police cars.


  Let me add the general remark that one can see here again that the  
military struggle is just one part of an overall political battle. The  
US occupiers could simply mow down these people with some machine gun  
rounds, but they see that the political results of that would be a  
disaster for them.
