[Marxism] support MWM
I want to agree with those who've backed the Million Worker March, especially
the reasons given by Dave, and his urging that local support committees be set
up.
Unfortunately US Labor Against War -- whose steering committee almost endorsed
it a couple months ago -- just decided by vote of its larger Leadership Council
not to endorse. And the reason is the same as that given by the AFL: that it
cuts across defeating Bush.
However they end by saying that affiliates of USLAW will likely participate,
and wish the March success.
So it's crucial that as many USLAW affiliates as possible be drawn into MWM
support committees. And once the election is over we can use the momentum
gathered during building the march to build permanent organizations (reviving
the Labor Party, founding a labor left within the unions) that can take on the
pro-Democratic wing of the AFL.

RE: USLAW position on endorsement of MWM
Brothers and Sisters:
We wish to inform you of the outcome of a referendum ballot of U.S. Labor
Against the War's Leadership Council on the question of endorsement of the
Million Worker March.
The Leadership Council is composed of one representative of each of the
affiliates of USLAW. The referendum was conducted by decision of the Steering
Committee of USLAW after more than two months of discussion and consideration.
A ballot was distributed to all affiliates which included arguments, both pro
and con. The final outcome of the referendum was 17 in favor of endorsement
and 27 opposed, with two additional advisory votes in opposition from task
force leaders who serve on the Steering Committee.
You should know that in the discussion of this question, there was broad
support for the concept of the Million Worker March and the program of demands
it has enunciated. The principal reason that many of USLAW affiliates declined
to endorse was not the concept or program but rather the timing of the MWM just
two weeks prior to the November 2nd election which will determine the outcome
of thousands of local, state and national public offices and initiative
questions of great importance to USLAW affiliates, in addition to the
presidency. Had the demonstration been scheduled after the election, it is
highly likely that a large majority of our affiliates would have endorsed and
enthusiastically organized participation by their members.
While USLAW is not endorsing the October 17 demonstration on Washington, D.C.,
no doubt some of our affiliates will participate in their own behalf. We wish
you much success in your efforts.
Yours in solidarity,
Bob Muehlenkamp
