[Marxism] Nader wins! But auto manufacturers keep him off ballot--I mean, take credit

SEAT BELTS, SOBRIETY LAWS SEND ROAD DEATH RATE TO RECORD LOW
By Jayne O'Donnell, USA TODAY
The death rate on U.S. roads is the lowest since the government began tracking it in 1966, federal auto safety officials said Tuesday.
Just 1.48 people died in traffic accidents for every 100 million miles traveled in 2003, according to the government's latest data. That's down from 1.51 the previous two years, and more than 5 deaths per 100 million miles in the 1960s, before strict U.S. safety regulations, tough enforcement of drunken-driving laws and emphasis on safety belt use.
"America's roads and highways are safer than ever," Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said.
Automakers, through their trade association, the Alliance of Auto Manufacturers, took credit Tuesday for helping cut deaths with vehicles that are "a virtual cocoon of safety" with air bags, crumple zones, anti-lock brakes and sophisticated safety belts.

Author Harold Evans perhaps best summed up Ralph Nader's impact on this nation.
"America owes more than it may ever realize to Nader and his Johnny Appleseed research and advocacy groups: Safer cars, Airbags. Medicines that are safe, effective and cheaper. Tractors that don't roll over. Scam-free hearing aids. Decent nursing homes. Fairer credit and insurance. Cleaner water. Safer factories…Nader and his groups have played a critical role in all these changes and thousands more. Nader is not invulnerable to criticism; he might perhaps too readily assume all producers are wrong, all consumers right. He has had his failures and setbacks, and he certainly has critics, irritated by his piety, and enemies, frightened by his effectiveness. Yet few have achieved more for the American citizen than Ralph Nader and his selfless crusade over the past 35 years."

______

And if Congress had mandated stronger airline cabin doors and a policy of keeping them locked, which Nader called for 35 years ago, there would have been no 9/11.
