Nobody should project strategies dependent upon successful
fortune-telling. A healthy movement is built on its victories not its
defeats. Working people will be defeated at the polls this November,
and will largely be the authors of that defeat, but we make a political
fight in order to point them towards independence. How the Democrats
have reacted has been a real eye-opener.
Think about this. All the polls show a hard core of 2-3% for Nader,
thumbing their noses at the all-out-effort of the Democrats to bulldoze
us. That may not sound like much, but it's several million people--very
significant when compared to the tens of thousands of people radical
enough to join a third party movement in 1970. These are stubborn
people with the strength of their convictions. If they hold fast and
all goes well, they could replicate their numbers very rapidly in a
crisis.
Either Bush or Kerry will botch things this next term. On the one hand,
I understand the argument that people already mistrust Bush and his
reelection will probably hasten the preconditions for a movement. On
the other hand, the quality of that movement requires a great deal more
independence from the Democrats. In that sense, a radicalization under
Bush will leave great illusions in the Democrats, while a Kerry
administration may seriously damage the credibility of the Democrats.
...but we don't need to guess what might be best for us because we don't
need to act on it.
We should just keep our wits about us and build as large and as
permanent a nucleus as we can.
Solidarity!
Mark L.
