RE: [Marxism] Whatever happened to the LMers ?
Gloat? Cry? Condemn?
LM and the RCP must have been one of the oddest groups on the
ultra-left. I used to work with a bloke in the RCP--he spent his leisure
time flaunting copies of 'Fight Racism-Fight Imperialism' at the top of
Charing Cross Road. I wouldn't say 'trying to sell' because they never
seemed to do so. Probably savoured their superiority to the masses
passing them by. They were probably unique in having no points of
contact whatsoever with the working class.
I once heard Mick Hume on the radio, saying that he was losing
£5000 an issue on Living Marxism and I thought "how can he possibly do
that?" Where did the money come from? Where do I find someone who will
finance a magazine for me to that level of loss? Many find their lives
destroyed by neo-liberalism but such people, like this Bill Durodie,
find themselves with little sinecures and TV appearances as some kind of
expert. "Will £200 be alright sir?" "Thank you very much."
