[Marxism] RE: Who is David Cobb?
I thoroughly agree with the sentiments expressed by Jose, that Bush is
actually the leser fo 2 evils due to the general incompetence of his
imperial approach. The more alert ruling class elements want him out
because Bush and Cheney have become to obvious in their thuggery. And also I
agree with where Fred Feldman is coming from, as expressed below...
<<I have always been opposed to lesser-evil choices among the imperialist
candidates. It was hard enough to get myself to support Nader and
Camejo after the party I have normally voted for (the Socialist Workers
Party, since 1964) spun off to the right toward the Republicans. They
now tilt toward Bush (in their own way) about as much as the Greens tilt
toward Kerry. (Their latest twist is the claim in the latest issue that
the stealing of the Florida election by the Jeb Bush administration in
2000 is a "conspiracy theory." Apparently the Militant assumes that
this idea is inherently paranoid since everybody knows that in the
United States votes are counted by Blind Economic Laws, and why would
they lie?)>>
Yes, many on this list came out of a party that once had a firm position on
being anti-Democratic Party, as well as anti-Republican. So it is very
disheartening to have to argue with list members who seem totally to have
junked this part of politics they once held as a given in the past. This
2004 election, we have seen socialists tail ending Greens and Nader, who
themselves are tailending the Democratic Party, which is in turn tailending
the Republican Party! And all this tailending is done in the name of
practicality, pragmatism, and being able to understand 'differences', while
others who disagree with this tailending approach to the elections for the
new 2004 US cheerleading squad, are accused of supposedly lacking this trait
to see real details with a magnifying glass.
Dear Walt and Paul, I understand the differences. When I talk with what I
will call the Christians For Torture People, I understand how different they
are from talking to exSWP people for Kerry, or exSWPers for the Green Party
comrades, or just plain folk who won't vote Bush this year. The religious
crowd loves Bush, and the more secular will be voting Kerry. Who could not
see the differences there?
In addition, males in general tend toward Bush, and females in general tend
toward Kerry. But isn't this stuff more about marketting, than something
more fundamental? Watching this stuff unfold every election, is really like
watching 2 groups of Lilliputia argue over their preferences in regard with
which side of the egg to crack. All that emotion over imagery is a
substitute for engagement in reality. In short, I don't think we should
give much of a f...
This is my base dispute with Paul and Walt's arguements about how they say
that we have to focus on 'differences' between Kerry and Bush, and then go
with Kerry. I will take to heart Lou's admonishment to tame down my way of
expressing dismay with this approach towards US electoral politics, but
still, I find this retreat towards lesser-of-two-evilism egg cracking
theology by committed socialists, as profoundly sad. As a socialist, I am
accustomed to tell people that they are being tricked by the pingpong games
we are forced to watch every four years. It makes no sense to me to start
cheerleading for one side of the ping-pong table as being possible saviors
of the patria if they win. Stop focussing on the ping pong, Paul and Walt.
That is all I have to say. I think that it is sound advice, and I hope that
it is not taken as a flame, since that is not my intent at all? I give the
same comment out to all those focused on the elections.
Plus, in the end, Jose is probably right about Bush in office being better
for the Left's ability ahead to mobilize people in the US. It's actually
very nice to see how well this group is moblizing for us, real hatred of US
corporate power. The empire without clothes on is easier to see.
