RE: [Marxism] The 1840s
Thanks for the note on the Liberty Party...lots of the links need to be
reconnected.
The idiotic piece by the Democrat makes references to the War with
Mexico fully as stupid as the present assertions about the Iraq War. In
the process, the writer makes a definite argument that Darwin's idea of
natural selection was all wrong....
The Liberty Party regularly denounced war. Many of the abolitionists
were also active peace societies. For them, "Manifest Destiny" was just
an excuse to rob Indians and Mexicans of their land in order rob
Africans of their freedom to work the stolen lands. In contrast, both
the Democrats and the Whigs accepted "Manifest Destiny" to various
degrees--the only exceptions in Congress really being the New Englanders
and that new Illinois Congressman Abraham Lincoln who committed
"political suicide" by opposing the war in 1847-49.
So, clearly, the third party opposed to the war was responsible for it,
be not being smart enough to support one of the major parties who
favored the war.
Sounds like the insane history of 2001-04 imposed on the past.
Supporters of Nader who was antiwar are responsible for the war because
we didn't vote for one of the two major pro-war candidates.
By any measure, they define themselves as the lunatic fringe...
Solidarity!
