RE: [Marxism] The 1840s
Mark says:
Ummm....If I'm reading that piece rightly, a Democrat is complaining
that the Liberty Party tilted the balance in 1844 to a
Democrat...strange thing for a Democratic to complain about. ...and
if we had done nothing, we'd still be electing J.K. Polks today.
...well, in a sense, we are.
Left up to today's feckless Anybody But Bush and Nader intellectuals,
America would never have become an independent nation to begin with!
Anyhow, they don't see any value in a cause that doesn't become
immediately popular, and they don't see that third parties in the
mid-19th century -- the Liberty Party and the Free Soil Party --
played an important role in contributing to divisions within the
Whigs and the Democrats. Nor do they think about the impact of the
Mexican War, which made the question of slavery in the newly acquired
territories the hottest debate in the nation, a catalyst of the Civil
War and emancipation.
Still, if truth counts for anything, the Liberty Party had nothing
like that impact. As Free Soilers in 1848, they helped tilt some
states one way or the other, but it was a matter of denying the
Whigs one state and the Democrats another.
The platforms of a lot of these third parties are posted at
http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Quad/6460/dir/plat.html.
I added a link to it. You also have a very neat summary of the
Liberty Party
<http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Quad/6460/dir/839lib.html> on
another part of your website, but links to the Liberty Party page
don't work.
