BUSH TRAVEL BAN TO CUBA

AMERICAN VENCEREMOS BRIGADE TO 
RE-ENTER U.S. AT PEACE BRIDGE


In civilized countries, citizens enjoy the right to travel to any
destination in the world. They may be advised by their travel
authorities that some destinations may not be physically safe
to visit and it would be difficult to provide diplomatic safeguards
that would facilitate return should a traveller encounter difficulty.


A free democracy does not say to its citizens, "if you choose to
travel to a place we do not like, when you return we will serve you
with an astronomical fine that you can ill afford, or we may even
give you jail time." Such is the case with the draconian measures
dictated to American citizens who wish to visit Cuba via Canada
or Mexico. Recently the Bush administration has broadened the
previous travel restrictions and embargo stipulations to include
additional inhuman measures. 


On Sunday, July 18, some 100 Americans, members of the
VENCEREMOS BRIGADE who made a similar crossing last
year after a two week stay in Cuba, together with the AFRICAN
AMERICAN AWARENESS GROUP will land at Toronto
Airport and spend the night as guests of one of locals of the
CANADIAN STEELWORKERS who have generously offered
their hall as a billeting station.


Early MONDAY Morning, on JULY 19, they will travel by
chartered buses to FORT ERIE where they intend to
re-enter their own country.They are fully aware of possible
consequences on challenging George Bush's travel to
Cuba restrictions.


Along with Niagara Centre, MPP, PETER KORMOS, on
MONDAY, JULY 19 at 8.30 am, join us at MATHER ARCH,
just off CENTRAL AVE. S . FORT ERIE, in the shadow of
the Peace Bridge, (exit QEW AT CENTRAL AVE. S. and
continue to MATHER CIRCLE) 


in a joyous welcome back ceremony and to wish the travellers
safe journey as they walk across the PEACE BRIDGE to
welcoming American supporters once they have cleared US
Customs. Right after festivities in the US, they will continue to
their own homes across the US. 


Some of us will peacefully convoy them across the Peace Bridge
as a sign of support and fellowship with their cause and will join up
with their fellow Americans who will be awaiting their return in the
park just a few steps away from the US Customs exit. Anyone who
wishes to join us on the pedestrian crossing must have the
required personal documentation to be able to pass through
customs.
