But when the legislation for the 35 hour week was
implemented, and assuming there wasn't such an
increase in productivity to make up for the gap in
lost labor hours, additional workers could have been
hired to fill up the lost hours. Still assuming no
major increase in productivity, this would have had to
happen to keep production at its pre-existing level
(or greater). Maybe relative profits would go down a
bit, but it still might benefit the owners to keep
production at the previous level, with a greater total
profit. And, this is only speaking of private sector
jobs-- there might be a different dynamic with the
public sector.
I could be making some incorrect assumptions here. I'm
not the most economically-minded person, and I don't
have much facts or data on the topic.
