[Marxism] Miskitos and Primitive Communism
Sorry, this should read "Berrio's of the Orinoco." Antonio
de Berrio's nemesis was Walter Ralegh, and the title of
Ralegh's book in Spanish was El descubrimiento del grande,
rico y bello imperio de Guayana. Maybe that's where the
slip "Bello" came from. Just thought I'd correct myself
before someone else did...
> Most likely, Old World diseases reached the Guianas
>during the sixteenth century, in the wake of Orellana's
>ravaging of the Amazon and Bello's of the Orinoco, but
>the decisive moment came as Dutch, English, French, and
>Portuguese merchants and planters dispossessed Amerindians
>from much of the Guiana coastal plains in order to
>establish a system of plantation slavery.
