[Marxism] Miskito leaders seek independence at the Hague courts

[A brief press release in Spanish by Prensa Latina, the Cuban agency,
follows].

The Miskito leadership, who expressed a doleful mourning for Ronald
Reagan upon his death, is now attempting to obtain full independence
through the Hague court. Perhaps the Miskito issue was not as simple
as it looked, even to many among the best revolutionaries in the area
("A legitimate nationalism misunderstood by the FSLN").

Perhaps it was something entirely different, or at least much more
complicated, an ethnic conflict created and fueled since the 17th
Century by British (later American) imperialism, pitting the Miskitos
against the bulk of the Latin American nation in order to carve out
another portion, to create new Belizes, actual Falklands on Terra
Firma. Perhaps the Miskitia issue has more to do with the Northern
Ireland issue than with the Palestinian question...

Please note that through this release (which very carefully does not
speak of "Miskitos" but of "Nicaraguan indigenous peoples", thus
asserting Cuban -and traditional Latin American- official position
that the Miskitos have no right to claim any form of "national"
independence from Nicaragua) we learn that "the Miskitos" have not
surrendered their claim for sovereignty, even after the Sandinistas
attempted a greatly generous policy towards them. It perspires, BTW,
that they seem to have frozen those claims when the FSLN left power,
and that they have begun to raise them again now, when FSLN may
return. That is, they don't care about independence unless Nicaragua
threatens to return to its own national goals and to confront,
however mildly, imperialism.

It is my own humble (and not so uninformed) opinion that these social
groups simply seek to further splinter Latin America, to secede, to
give the back to the Latin American drama, and to finally become
privileged partners of British imperialism -such as Belize- by
creating local monoproductive Gibraltars.

In the same way that one would brand an enemy any Cuban resident of
Guantánamo who favored permanent secession and "independence" of the
area, one should take with the greatest care the delicate balance
between justice to local cultural traditions and Balkanizing efforts
by local hirelings of imperialist powers, even if they may be "First
Nation" hirelings. The latter come in all forms and shapes,
something British diplomatic wisdom has always known and we
revolutionaries seem to be prone to sentimentally forget.
