RE: [Marxism] SWP and Hired Petitioners
Nelson lives in Los Angeles where I see him from time to time.
I can tell you there never were any paid petitioners when I was
doing it, for the first time in 1964 in upstate New York where
a carload of people, including me and Nat Weinstein went around
the smaller counties collecting those signatures to get the SWP
ticket of DeBerry and Shaw on the ballot. In those days there
was a completely undemocratic distribution requirement that we
had to have fifty or a hundred signatures in each one of the
state's sixty-two counties. This was not an easy thing to do,
but we managed to get it done on more than one occasion. The
SWP also petitioned in a number of other states through the
years, never paying anyone for the work.
