Re: [Marxism] Forwarded from Anthony (reply to Julio Huato)

Can you name the speculators? I'm just curious.

In my opinion, the Brenner-Laclau-Leys line of reasoning has enormous
affinities with Second International and Stalinist stagism, which is often
evident in Julio's interventions around questions such as NAFTA, etc.
Brenner, after all, is the first to admit that he is a disciple of Maurice
Dobb, an outstanding CP theoretician who never really understood combined
and uneven development.

IMO, when you reject "Stalinist stagism" -- insistently conflating it with
the Hegelian (Second International) view of capitalist development and
communism, that has been amply criticized by Western (and Eastern) Marxists
-- you're actually rejecting Karl Marx's fundamental theses on historical
materialism.

I don't think Marx's views should be adopted dogmatically. In every
significant twist of capitalist history, the classical views should be
revisited and retested. I don't see a way around that. But they shouldn't
be treated nonchalantly as if they had been refuted definitively.

I myself find little reason nowadays to try to answer him, since he is
rather hardened on these questions and since there are so few comrades who
are inclined to take this seriously.

I hope I'm not hardened or dogmatic. I try to be open to good argument.
What I don't like (this is not to Lou, but to others) is when people
question my motives because (1) I am a "professor of economics," (2) my
personal literary style is bad, or (3) they don't like the ideas themselves
but have a hard time limiting themselves to criticizing them.

That being said, these arguments do enjoy wide support in academia.

Where?

Julio
