[Marxism] Marxism Today (was Re: Query)
Eatonak said:
Marxism Today was acquired by New Statesman in December 1991. I
enjoyed the scope of the magazine (articles on soccer, films, etc.)
and also have a collection of the magazine; though it didn't seem a
magazine of CP dissidents to me. It was very pro Eurocommunism.
However, it allowed non-CP marxists to publish in it<<.
From my recollection Marxism Today was put out by the Eurocommunist
wing of the CPGB, which was dominant by the end of the 1980s, but
opposed by the more "traditional" Stalinist-reformist wing around the
daily paper the Morning Star. The former dissolved the party in 1991
(presumably when the magazine folded) into the Democratic Left (which
I don't think is still around), while the latter kept the daily and
reformed into the Community Party of Britain. There was also a small
"back to Lenin" faction that now goes by the original CPGB name and
puts out the Weekly Worker.
Around 1989-90 as a young media student I quite liked Marxism Today
for its emphasis on culture and funky design influenced by the
seminal design figure Neville Brody. I soon realised that its blather
about "new politics" was a retreat from class politics informed by an
unsavory mixture of Labour reformism, postmodernism and the less
useful ideas of British cultural studies (like the later Stuart
Hall). I'm sure there's plenty of interesting stuff amongst it all
though.
