[Marxism] Dublin and Monaghan Bombings

Barron admits errors in bombings report

16/05/04 00:00

By Paul T Colgan

The Barron report on the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings contained several
factual errors regarding witness evidence, its author has admitted.

Retired High Court judge Henry Barron has written to two witnesses outlining
proposed corrections to his report, which was published last December.

Barron has told journalist Paul Larkin and retired army intelligence officer
Lieutenant Colonel John Morgan that he will amend their evidence in a report
next month. In January, this newspaper reported that Barron failed to
double-check their evidence

prior to publication and misattributed other evidence to them.

Larkin said that typed transcripts of interviews he gave Barron were
returned to him with serious inaccuracies, such as the misspelling of names.
Larkin and Morgan have demanded public apologies from Barron.

Barron's report found no evidence of high-level collusion between British
intelligence and loyalist bomb squads in the bombings, but said that
collusion was ``likely''.

Finian McGrath, an Independent TD who sat on the Dail committee that
examined Barron's report, said the admission of inaccuracies raised ``major
concerns''.

``There is a lot of evidence coming before the current inquest that didn't
appear in the report and certainly didn't come to our attention on the
committee. It just proves to me the need for a full public inquiry. The
government is not dealing with the real issues here. It is a fudge.''
