I think useful way to look at the question is from the standpoint from media
producers. You always have to select and reconcile the news (the supply)
with the audience that consumes it (the demand). This is one of the greatest
intellectual challenges there is, and one needs a never-ending stock of
metaphors to match supply and demand, i.e. great semantic sophistication and
semantic dexterity. This creates a natural tendency towards epistemic (or
even ontological) idealism.
