[Marxism] Nader in the 1959 American Socialist
"The American Socialist" was published from 1954 to 1959 in New York. The
article referred to doesn't appear to be available on-line just now, and is
not being held by the Ohio State University library. See, for selected
articles from the magazine:
http://www.marxists.org/history/etol/newspape/amersocialist/American_Sociali
st.htm .
The International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam however holds a
complete set of issues, except for Vol. 6, no. 11.

...the magazine American Socialist... lasted for only a few short years,
but it was one of the best
things that came out of the American left in that dismal decade. It was the
first place to publish William Appleman Williams and Ralph Nader.
Commenting on the journal "The Nation" in an article Counterpunch, February
19, 2004, Ralph Nader had stated:
"The Nation first informed me as a young man about the deliberate
barriers-statutory, monetary, media and others-to third parties and
independent candidates for a chance to compete, bring out more votes and
generate more civic and political energies. This led me to write my
first article on these exclusions against smaller candidacies in the
late 1950s..."
Louis commented on Nader's statement: "I believe that the article Nader is
referring to was published in Bert
Cochran's American Socialist."

{Hitchens} writes that the "earliest piece I was
able to find by Ralph Nader was published in the ultra-conservative
American Mercury magazine in March 1960". He probably wasn't digging very
deep. In fact Ralph Nader wrote an article for the American Socialist a
couple of years earlier calling for sweeping changes in the US electoral
system that he found deeply anti-democratic.
I think it should be possible to verify if the article was published in the
American Socialist (possibly under a pseudonym).
