[Marxism] Songs
Two points firstly ( and please my ignorance) I recently came across on the
internet Bing Crosby and Al Jolson singing 'Brother can you spare a dime' which
I think is a fantastic song. I believe this was a popular song at the time and
it would be intersting to know what other popular songs existd at the time.
Also I have recently discovered West Side Stry and the lyrics to America are
brilliant.
My point is that aaprt from the socialist canon of songs there are many others
in that political tradition that somehow seem to become acceptable to a mass
audience, rather than the usual political activists.
My other point is that during the Punk era in the UK ( I was one) a debate
developed about the role of music in politics could music change the world or
not. My view is that music merely reinforces the political views of those
singing/listenig to the songs and songs are part of the wider political
movement that they form part of.
