You're certainly right about aircraft, Jon. I should have made myself
clearer. Substitutes for the use of fossil fuel, such as using wind
turbines to produce electricity, are not a complete alternative to
fossil fuels. However, to the degree that they replace electricity
produced by non-renewable (and ecologically unsound) resources, they
will of course slow depletion of fossil fuel reserves. And most of us on
this list will probably agree that the use of fossil fuel-consuming
trucks and private automobiles should be drastically reduced in favour
of ecologically sounder means of transportation such as railroads and
rapid transit systems, which can be and often are powered by
electricity.

In the longer run, we need to eliminate imperialism with its massive
fossil fuel-consuming military machine, and break down the distinction
between city and countryside, etc. It is a race for time, and for
survival of this planet. But we should also be aware that
mass-production substitutes for fossil-fuel energy sources are being
developed and, if society were organized on a non-capitalist basis,
could be developed much further and faster and used far more extensively
than they are now. That's all.
