- Thread-topic: Vanunu as weapon of mass destruction ?
Mordechai Vanunu's release is cause for celebration, in fact personally I felt
quite cheery at least part of yesterday. However, Ha'aretz reports that along
with Israel, the US State Department "will be following Vanunu's words and
deeds after his release" and that Gideon Frank (director general of Israel's
Atomic Energy Commission) has met with John Bolton, the US undersecretary of
state for arms control and international security, "to discuss Vanunu's
release". The claim made is that Vanunu "will try to cause problems for
Israel". Attorney Avigdor Feldman, reinstated as Vanunu's counsel, was reported
as implying that Vanunu is "a rebel by nature", and so the restrictions imposed
on him will "merely goad him into trying to violate them".
This should raise 7 important civil rights issues about pro-active justice
among all freedom-loving people:
(1) how can a "nature" itself, instead of real evidence of new criminal
behaviour by an inmate who have served his time, be a cause for new security
action by the State Department ?
(2) how will Israel's Atomic Energy Commission follow him in the United States
upon his prospective arrival there ?
(3) what justifies publicly-made claims about legal violations by an individual
in the future, if they haven't happened yet ?
(4) does "cause problems" here mean expressing a critical opinion of Israel's
fissile material?
(5) how will the State Department follow him outside of the United States ?
(6) why should his release from being imprisoned in Israel, apart from an
actual entry into the United States, be an immediate issue for intervention by
Bolton ?
(7) how can the State Department provide leadership, if it is constantly
following everybody ?
