Talk of conscription comes from idiot reactionaries consulting other
idiot reactionaries.  It comes under the category of "give 'em enough
rope."

The fact is that the kind of ambitious young people who would have
prattled the G.O.P. rhetoric in past years just plain don't understand
this war, and clearly see the administration as a cluster of
self-seeking liars who engineered it.  They are as skeptical as we were
during the buildup in Vietnam.

If the authorities want to transform that skepticism into activism, they
couldn't have picked a better issue.
