[Marxism] re: Books on the Spanish Civil War,
Chris,
I think all your suggestions are excellent. (well, the PL piece was a
bit much, but it was a kick to read!). There should be no heat on this
because people decided to make suggestions, and in very non-polemical
tones. I think it's excellent and it's probably the only way here to
discuss the SCW assuming this thread, which is a bibliographic thread,
continues.
When I was at the University of Pittsburgh, I had a European history
professor names Walter Colodny (sp?). This was 1978. He was a veteran
of the Spanish Civil War with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and, like
many others, wrote a book on it. He argued that there were more books
written on the Spanish Revolution than on WWII! He had the
bibliography, it seems, to prove it.
We've had some Anarchist sources mentioned but I would be real good if
there were more, their history of literature on this is equal to or
greater than the traditional Stalinist/Trotskyist ones.
I will add a few more...
Red Spanish Notebook. Written by the two supporters of the POUM who had
resigned form the SWP in the 1930s, they issued the US support
newspaper "Spanish Revolution" during the 1936-37 period. It is
published by City Lights Press in San Francisco. The SWP was opposed to
sending cadre and supporters to Spain to fight in the POUM's "Lenin"
Battalion.
The People Armed--Durrtti. By Abel Paz, political biography of Durruti
during the Revolution.
The Anarchist Collectives and the Spanish Revolution by Leval. A full
length book on the history of the Collective movement in Catalonia and
Aragon.
