It's aesopian language. Whatever political position you have, to move to
the "middle" you must move to the right. E.g., if you are Mussoline,
then the "middle" is (say) Hermann Goering, who is jollier than Hitler
and therefore moderate while Mussolini is clearly too far to the left to
be in the mainstream.
