RE: [Marxism] Re: Help on Hitchens (or Ignatieff) on railroad andindian genocide (Gilles d'Aymery)

Gilles wrote: Some time ago, either Hitchens or Ignatieff wrote
something to the effect that -- and I paraphrase -- yes there had been a
US genocide of the Indians but one should also keep in mind that we had
brought the railroad to the West.

I wonder if the post-11 September Hitchens now fervently celebrates
Columbus Day, and considers that the slaughter of the native Americans
was a price worth paying for the triumph of today's USA?

Response (Jim C): Why do we continually see reference to the past tense
with reference to genocide against Indigenous Peoples in the Americas.
It is going on right now, every minute, every second, all over the
Americas and elsewhere where there are Indigneous Peoples. And by
genocide, I mean exactly as defined in Article II of the 1948 UN
Convention on Genocide (How many of those who routinely use the term
"genocide" have actually read the UN Convention on Genocide defining
it?).
