An obvious place to begin is with Ste. Croix, The Class Struggles in the
Ancient Greek World, with voluminous footnotes to other sources. See
also, George Thompson, _The First Philosophers_ -- but use with caution
and checked against other sources. Also see M.I. Finley, _Ancient
Slavery and Modern Ideology_, not a marxist source but influenced by and
fair to marxist perspectives. (He approaches the topic in terms of
[Weberian] stratification theory, focusing on status rather than class.)
And for Athens only, see Ellen Meiksins Wood, _Peasant-Citizen and
Slave: The Foundations of Athenian Democracy_, which also has very
useful footnotes to other sources.
