Spanish history has been dominated by the features of its Middle
Ages, which were dominated by the effort to reconquer the land (an
effort which lasted many centuries), by economic backwardness and by
the grip of landed property. Inquisition played a minor role. And in
a sense so did Franco.

The "Inquisition + Franco" scarecrow is a "leftish" version of the
Anglophile Black Legend. But I still have to see a Massachussetts
Bay Puritan writing what Las Casas, a man who was _not_ against
Inquisition, wrote about American first nations.
