RE: [Marxism] The 'Militant' and Haiti
We don't really disagree. It may be a matter of emphasis.
I think we're all trying to figure out these days what
the SWP is and where it's going. It's not looking good.
I think THE MILITANT has pretty much the same line on
Haiti as on Iraq: demonizing the previous government,
which is just what the US government and the kept media
are doing. THE MILITANT echoes that same "failed state"
rhetoric that Washington propaganda is putting out.
The key is that since Saddam and Aristide were so bad,
therefore, there's no reason to demand their release
from US custody. There must be SOME reason why we're
also not seeing anything in the pages of THE MILITANT
about the Cuban medical team and its non-partisan way
of providing necessary care during today's crisis.
And it's the same thing in Venezuela where they call
Chavez a Bonapartist. You wouldn't want to be caught
dead supporting a Bonapartist, would you? Check this:
http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1939/1939-war.htm
This is part of the reason why the SWP continues to
seek reasons to attack the Communist Party, USA and
Workers World. They need reasons to tell their members
NOT TO GET INVOLVED IN THE STRUGGLE AS IT IS. There
are world-wide mobilizations against war and occupation,
but to THE MILITANT, these things don't exist. Look:
http://www.themilitant.com/2004/6810/index.shtml Not a
word of mention of these mobilizations, last week or
this week. They must think that if they don't mention
them, they won't exist. (It's like how the US refused
to recognize China for so long, or how it refuses to
recognize Cuba today.)
They didn't even report Jon Hillson's memorial meeting
and he was an all-out political supporter of theirs!
"Mother, may I go out to swim?"
"Yes, my darling daughter.
Fold your clothes up neat and trim,
But don't go near the water."
=====================================================
I agree with you, Walter.
----------------------
The 'Militant' position on Haiti is actually worse than their position
on Iraq. Whereas in Iraq they opposed the invasion, but joined in the
imperialist demonisation of the Iraqi resistance, engage in the
imperialist lie that Washington is some kind of benevolent protectorate
in Iraq and abstain from the movement to get US troops out, in Haiti
they actually cover for US intervention in the first place.
So the lurch to the right has been clearly intensified.
