Two dead, 13 hurt in Haiti clash

AT least two people were shot dead and 13 wounded today when supporters
of Haiti's former president, Jean Bertrand Aristide, opened fire on
protesters marching to the presidential palace, according to witnesses
and local radio reports.

As many as 10,000 anti-Aristide protesters had marched to the
presidential palace, escorted by heavily armed US marines and French
gendarmes.

Aristide supporters had planned a rival demonstration, sparking fears of
new violence in Port-au-Prince, a city already rocked by unrest and
chaotic looting following the president's resignation and flight a week
ago.
