Comrades,
I am starting a discussion group of "Monopoly Capital" by Baran and
Sweezy. Here is my plan:
I propose the following:
1. We begin the discussion on April 10th. This would have been Paul
Sweezy's 94th birthday. This will give all of us a chance to get a copy of
the book and read all or most of it. I haven't read it since the mid
1980s, so this gives me time to read it again.
2. Starting on April 10th, we will read a chapter every two weeks.
3. At the start of each two-week period, I will post a short summary of the
chapter and pose some questions. Then we can all either respond to these,
pose our own questions, or comment on any part of the chapter. This way,
any of us who have some special knowledge about the materials in the
chapter can share with the group, and any of us who want to dispute what
the authors or one of us say can do so, etc. Those who prefer not to
participate in any a particular discussion are, of course, free to do
so. This group is large enough so that some persons will probably be
unavailable to participate at some time, but it is also large enough so
that there will be some participation every period.
4. At the end of each two-week period, I will post a brief summing up of
our discussions.
5. I plan just to use regular email for the discussion. Each of can then
put the discussions, etc. into a folder on our computers. I am not
probably computer savvy enough to do something more complicated.
6. It might be a good idea to look at a bio of Paul as soon as
possible. John Foster wrote one for the "Biographical Dictionary of
Dissenting Economists" published by Elgar.
7. Each person should post any materials he or she thinks relevant to the
discussion, so that we can come out of this with a good bibliography.
Let me know asap. There are now 13 persons in the group. I am at
