Highlights from the issue 29 of Forward:
Worker-communism in Iraq
The dark scenario and the question of political power
By Hamid Taghvaie,Leader of WCPIran .
The political and social situation in Iraq is an immense human catastrophe,
bleak, chaotic with total social disintegration. It is a dark scenario - a term
initially labelled and characterised by Mansoor Hekmat. This state of affairs
is a consequence of the post-cold war world and the resulting emergence of
extremely reactionary religious, ethnic, tribal and nationalist forces in the
capitalist free market. In the early 90s, Bosnia was a clear example of this
dark scenario; so is today's Iraq. In this situation, the political calamity is
a direct result of the USA and its allies' policies and military attack on
Iraq. With the military attack, the state was removed from above and whatever
civility and societal system was in place before the war, suddenly collapsed.
On the one hand, bread, security, electricity, the water supply, housing and
the most basic social amenities vanished and on the other hand, the most
backward religious, nationalist and tribal forces moved to the forefront of the
social stage and became the dominant forces in society. We foresaw this dark
scenario well before the USA's attack on Iraq; today given that it has become a
reality, a response to the situation is essential. This response, however,
cannot remain at an analytical and general level.

Worker-communist Party Leader Rebwar Ahmad on Iraq?s Upcoming Elections
Question: Currently, the US is forming an electoral system to decide the
future of Iraq?s provisional government. They want to elect representatives
from various provinces across Iraq through caucuses. The Shia political
movement shows discontent, instead calling for direct elections to form the
provisional government and legislative authority in Iraq. What is the WPI?s
position on this issue? Al Sistani?s representatives claim that the desired
outcome of direct elections would be a political regime, and that they want a
constitution that guarantees ?justice and equality.? Through such slogans,
Islamists are trying to attract people to their side. What is your message to
the Iraqi masses vis-à-vis the outlook of the Shiite Islamists?

Workers Strike at North Gas Company
The employees of the North Gas Company in Kirkuk went on strike on January 31,
2004. This strike came after workers warned the authorities to meet their
demands. The employees demanded the replacement of the company
administration, still in existence since the Baath era. In addition, they
demanded higher wages and equal division of rewards among workers.

Join Our Demonstration
To: All Workers and Employees of State-Owned Factories, Establishments, Offices
and Companies in Iraq
Low wages and lack of sufficient income have greatly deteriorated the living
conditions of workers. As a result, workers are being deprived not only of the
ability to achieve a decent life, but also the minimum standard of living
necessary to keep them alive.
The current salary scale has created many hardships for workers. The job
classifications don?t take into account the hardship and hazardous working
conditions. There is a huge gap in salary and benefits between senior employees
and the vast majority of workers. In most cases, senior workers are paid up to
30 times more than other workers. The job classifications as implemented have
brought about vast social disparities among human beings and have deprived the
largest sector of society from their right to enjoy a decent and dignified life.
