Actually, slavery might have been slavery everywhere, but it was
demonstrably worse where the scale of labor was greater and the level of
exploitation more unalloyed.
As to slave resistance, Herbert Aptheker correctly argued that it had
been understated, but he was basing his argument for the kind of
resistance there was on the written record...that is the perspective of
slaveholders. Slave rebellion was the greatest nightmare they had and
they were prone to paranoia and panic about such things.
Resistance to slavery was pervasive everywhere, but rebellion wasn't
that common. The slaves themselves knew that such rebellions were
eventually defeated and put down in blood-- the major exception being
Haiti. Nor do I think that there were many untargeted attempts to
poison or remove specific whites. Rather, American slaves primarily
resisted by trying to escape and helping others to escape. Not as
dramatic, but this was what ultimately destroyed the institution.
