RE: [Marxism] What is the so-called "middle class"?
Bill Moyers was using a classical sociological definition of middle
class in terms of the demographics of income distribution. Yes, it is
not Marxist, internally inconsistent, etc.
The origins of modern social sciences at the onset of this century
largely involved inventing ways to talk about society and social issues
without reference to Marx and others who had discussed these larger
questions with an honesty that was painful to the powers-that-be.
That said, I think Moyer's program has done some very fine work. Time
spent explaining such things to millions of people is better spent than
discussing things on email lists with hundreds, no?
Solidarity!
