[Marxism] Correction
In my hurried post last night in response to Bob Gould's post on the ALP
conference, I described the Michelle O'Neill protectionist resolution
Bob was so enamoured of as being "racist". My friend Tom O'Lincoln has
pointed out to me that while it's fair enough to attack the resolution,
calling it racist is going too far.
I'm usually fairly careful about bandying around terms - for instance, I
hate the casual way the word 'fascist' is bandied about on the left and
the way the politically correct brigade bandies about terms like
'racist'. So I think I made a mistake in describing it as racist. I
think the *effect* the resolution has is actually racist, because it
seeks to protect jobs in Australia at the expense of jobs in Third World
countries, but it was over-the-top for me to label the resolution itself
'racist', and I would not like it to be construed that, by implication,
I was suggesting O'Neill is some kind of racist.
So, thanks Tom, for being a measured, friendly critic and pointing out
that I was getting a bit carried away in terminology.
Philip Ferguson
