RE: [Marxism] Michael Moore and Wesley Clark
Michael Moore supported Nader, yeah.
But what was telling about that was that his support wasn't grounded in
any support for independent political action, he just didn't like how
conservative Gore was. He's of the "left" ilk that wants to "take the
Democratic Party back."
I think the Mumia thing was also very telling--Junaid makes an
interesting point when he calls Moore a populist. I think there is an
element of that to Moore's spiels, but I think the main thing has been
his rising fame. He has moved steadily to the right over the past few
years--Mumia, Clark (who he's been gushing over for some time now--his
nauseating statement wasn't exactly a surprise), his cavalier attitude
towards the Palestinians. (In Stupid White Men, he showed much more
recognition of the oppression Palestinians have endured: "I, for one,
don't want apartheid being funded in my name--anywhere.")
As time progresses, I think we'll see Moore move more and more to the
right. That seems to be the tragedy of well-intentioned liberals; their
hearts might be in the right place, but eventually their intentions and
any remnants of progessive politics fall by the wayside.
