Re: [Marxism] Milosevic's/socialists and the radical party poised to win the election...

It is only reasonable that news on Serbian elections generate
provocations. Our New Orleans correspondent believes that anti-
imperialist struggle is a Mardi Gras where a man can choose a partner
by throwing diamond (even false diamond) necklaces to the streets
while females march on parade.

Not at all. You need people who can and will, first of all, pull the
trigger against an imperialist stooge or an imperialist soldier. And,
believe me, it is not at Mardi Gras parades that you can find such
people. It is, usually, among patriots.

Now, patriots in an oppressed country come in all shapes and
fashions. But, curiously enough, their leaders usually admire such
people as Ernesto Guevara or Salvador Allende (this is true for the
Serbian Socialist Party, at the very least). And they receive a
silent backing from the Cuban Embassy.

The presence of Milosevic (and, yes, of Seselj) on the ballot tickets
is the result of a long resistence by the Serbian people, who have
consistently delegitimized four (four!) elections to Parliament and
will now -remember this prediction, either to my blame or to my
praise- flock to the polling booths in order to vote Milosevic to
Parliament.

Maybe our New Orleans resident is right, and Milosevic is a "Serbian
Nationalist" with no socialist credentials. I know that Louisiana is
a haven for socialism and it is completely reasonable that a hard
liner in that State should blast Milosevic for not being socialist,
or socialist enough. But (also) maybe our correspondent accepts that
Mr. Trotsky was a socialist, wasn't he.

Then, he should keep a clean and open ear for his clear message: "In
a war between Fascist Brazil and Democratic England, every socialist
must support Fascist Brazil against Democratic England, because this
will be a war between a semicolonial country and an imperialist
nation". Belgrade and Brasilia are quite different and widely
appart. However, it would be silly to suppose that Belgrade is
_stornger_ than Brasilia. And both belong to planet Earth, and on
planet Earth the main contradiction is still the contradiction
between oppressing and oppressed peoples.

The oppressed Serbians chose to support Milosevic. The oppressor
imperialists chose to demonize him. Maybe in Louisiana this is not as
clear as elsewhere. But well, such is life.
