[Marxism] Nader is to be Applauded for Departing the Green Party
Left undiscussed in these debates about the meaning of Nader's decision to
not run as a Green Party candidate is to why he might have made the
decision? Put straight to the point, I think that Nader is more of an
anticapitalist than the Green Party is. He decided to run as an
independent because he knew that the Greens had no stomach to run a real
campaign in 2004 for the Presidency. At least, I think that that might
have been the real motivation for Nader to part ways. After all, he
never thought confidently enough of the Green Party to even become a real
member of it!
The Green Party in the US continues to be more of a pressure group to try to
push the DP leftward, and Nader wanted more than that. He understands
this 2-party see-saw charade much better than people like Michael Moore and
Kovel do. And as an independent he will still be able to tell people that
the whole US 2-party system is a con and their disenfranchisement, something
that the Green Party fails to do.
The Green Party just failed its biggest test. That test was to keep
people like Nader on board, and to mount a SERIOUS presidential campaign.
It's clear that its Green 'new energy' battery is dead, and the Greens
have now set themselves out to be totally irrelevent to US politicking for
some time to come. That's true no matter who wins the presidency in 2004.
If the Republicans win, the Greens have already answered those people who
have asked themselves about whether they are a real challenge to the 2
parites, or not. They decided to surrender to the Democrats without a
fight. The message to the DP being.... "Here, you run instead of us"!
That will now clearly be understood by all.
If the Democrats win the Presidency, that will also work against the Greens
long time. Why build a challenge to people that you helped elect?
Nader got off this bankrupt ship just in time, I think. Why should he
have stayed a waited for this debacle to play out? Nader does not want to
help elect Democratic Party hacks, and as an independent he can clearly
still state that. However, the Green Party does support electing sweet
talking DP politicos to hig and low offices.
There will ultimately be political challenge to the 2 parties. But it
will not be the Greens and the same old, same olds of the DP liberal
establishment that will pave the way. The surge forward will have to come
from outside the electoral arena, too. It will have to be from a grouping
that just flat out tells the truth to the American people....... "You do
not have a functioning democratic electoral system. We cannot really
participate in that. That element of democracy was stolen from you long,
long ago."
The Green Party does not have that message in hand. It has the opposite
message of ..."Let's Reclaim America" crap, by putting liberal DPers
(Greens)into office once again.
Socialists should NOW call for building a Nader independent campaign, now
that he is free of the pro-capitalist Green Party baggage. And should
encourage him to speak the truth about our corporate dictatorship, and how
it is not reformable via rigged elections. And he should be pushed into
trying to build a Movement that takes to the streeets, and not just goes out
lobbying. Nader had that strategy most of his life, and now I think he
realizes what a dead end it ultimately was.
Vote Ralph Nader in 2004. Let's hope he can put together a campaign,
since the Greens certainly didn't want to do it.
