Castro Speculates US Problems In Iraq Deter Cuba Invasion
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
CARACAS (AP)--The U.S. may think twice about attacking Cuba after the
difficulties it has faced in the Iraq invasion, Cuban leader Fidel
Castro said in an interview published Wednesday in Venezuela's Ultimas
Noticias newspaper.
Asked if he feared a U.S. invasion of Cuba, Castro said he "couldn't
rule out any dangers," especially after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror
attacks "created favorable conditions for those who have no common
sense and are the most violent."
But he said U.S. President George W. "Bush has acquired some
experience and he'll learn from other people that the world can't be
governed that way."
"Once in a while, I perceive symptoms of common sense and wisdom" in
Americans, Castro said. "So the moment will come when they'll
understand this is not the path to peace."
The communist leader gave the interview Monday during aide one-day
visit to Venezuela to meet with President Hugo Chavez.
The Cuban embassy confirmed the interview.
Castro declined to say where he thought captured Iraqi dictator Saddam
Hussein should be tried. But he said the U.S. shouldn't "pretend to
have the right to invade a country and then decide where (its leader)
should be tried."
After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Castro repeatedly accused the
U.S. of seeking a pretext to strike Cuba. U.S. officials have denied
such intentions.
