[Marxism] Re: Joel Kovel on Nader candidacy

Derek sent a quote from Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman ("No Cause for
Surprise", MR Sept, 1949). Ironically, or not, those two had just been
the on the platform committee for Henry A. Wallace?s 1948 run for the
Presidency on the Progressive Party ticket. As much as I understand
their move, in the international as well as domestic context of the
times, by no stretch of the imagination was the Progressive Party an
explicitly anti-capitalist party?despite its great numbers of active
Marxists, both from the CP, fellow travelers, and others.

The underlying message for me is that the primary focus of action should
not be in the corrupt and completely compromised realm of capitalist
politics?but that does not mean we should suppress or stifle any agency
that might pull developments in our favor. It may simply be a matter of
optimal utilization of finite effort and resources. Nevertheless, to
enlarge on a phrase made famous by Malcolm X: ?By all means.?
