Re: [Marxism] The Libyan decision




Kaddafi knew that Bush, after Saddam's capture, would
be highly receptive to an overture to disarm or
discontinue Libya's WMD program. Kaddafi is smart
enough to know that Bush wants build political capital
going into an election year and this will assist him
in that effort.

I'd be interested in seeing how far Libya got in its
production of WMDs'. In the popular imagination,
Kaddafi is an Arab boogeyman who embodied another
threat to the national security of America and other
Western powers. The idea of non-Western powers
possessing such weaponry is more powerful than what
weapons inspections usually reveal.

If it turns out that Libya hadn't accomplished much to
warrant fear in the West, then their "abandonment" of
weapons programs will be as meaningful as Greenland
issuing the same overture.
