Re: [Marxism] Saddam and Washington
The triumphalism in the news media here in Oz is unbearable at present. I
have boycotted all news except Aljazeera as a result.
But amidst all the self congratulation and sickening celebrations, there
has been little attention paid to the fact that having Saddam as a
prisoner, does have its down side. His public humiliation, eg showing
shots of a doctor examining him may play well in the West but among Arabs
it is a bitter pill to swallow and that has nothing to do with his stooge
or rebel status. Now he quite clearly is in prison because he was opposed
albeit reluctantly to the Americans.
However who will be chosen for the role of his judges and executioners in
Iraq? If it is a Shiite judge then there will be a terrible price to pay
in Sunni-Shia tensions. Can the Americans get a Sunni court to do their
dirty work?
If they try him outside Iraq that will only confirm his martyr status.
So Bremer and Bush and Howard and Blair may crow in boastful joy, but it is
not all over by any means. In the meantime the resistance continues to
exact a heavy price from the imperialist invaders.
regards
Gary
