15,000 attend immigrant rights event in San Francisco
Mainly organized by the Immigrant Rights Movement and
the Left Party and endorsed by 50 community, political
and labor organizations was held last Sunday, October
26 from 10 AM - to 2 PM.
The event actually started about 11:30 and throughout
the day the crowd grew and renewed constantly. We had
about 2-4,000 people average per hour.
There were speeches from labor, Palestinians, Left
Party, immigrant rights and several recognized
politicians like candidates for Mayor Green Matt
Gonzalez and liberal Democrat Ammiano as well as
scandalous Chris Daly and others.
Great music, dance troupes and politicking. Spotted
booths and tables included Left Party, MDI, the
campaign of Kucinich for President, Green Party and
others.
The crowd was mixed with majority immigrants during
the first hours but later become a huge crowd of
mostly immigrants.
Good coverage of TV channels 14, 48, 5, 4, 2 and
several radio stations. As usual, most of the
organized left was not present.
The event was a big victory since it was held after
city bureacrats and the police rejected the permit to
hold it on that location (Mission Street between 24th
and 25th Streets) and after a political campaign their
prohibition was overturn by the City's Board of
Supervisors.
This is the first time this street is closed for a
Civil Rights, political event.
Main banners, slogans and speeches were around:
No war, No racism
Repeal of the Patriot Act
Papers for All!
For the right to vote for non-citizens
